2008 SCION NYBB PRO Presented By Verizon Wirlesss - FINAL RESULTS & PRESS RELEASE

NYBB PRO USBA SCION VERIZON CONTEST BODYBOARDING

USBA__SCION_MEN’S FINAL RESULTS - Sep 7, 2008

THE BODYGLOVE BODYBOARDS USBA TOUR

Presents

THE 2008 SCION NYBB PRO

Presented By: Verizon Wireless

SPONSORS: SCION, BODYGLOVE BODYBOARDS & VERIZON WIRELESS

Regional Sponsors: EastCoastBodyboards.com, NMD Bodyboards, VS Bodyboards, Empire Bodyboards, Ally Sporting Goods, Original Skates , UnsOund surf, NYBodyboarding.com

The final day of the 2008 SCION NYBB Pro Presented by Verizon Wireless was nothing short of an amazing event, and a huge crowd of over 5,000 people were there to witness all of the action. Mother Nature was the events best friend today, after tropical storm Hanna having  blown through Long Island overight, leaving a solid pulse of swell and offshore/cross shore winds in her trail for Round 1 of the Men’s Pro Bodyboarding Division.

Starting off the contest was a focused Jeremy Wright who progressed through his heat with ease, along with a Puerto Rico’s Jorge Colomar. In heat two of round one Jason Bitzer seemed to have a field day with the solid conditions linking a barrel to roll to barrel combo and a solid invert to back up his first wave for the win. Miguel Ochoa of Long Beach did his home town proud placing second to an on fire Jeff Hubbard who was keeping the level of surfing high through the event. An upset went down with three Californian riders going down in round one. Rusty Friesen, Ray Machado and Justin Crossman all could not find their rhythm and were headed back to NYC to enjoy the rest of their vacations. Willy Petrovick (HI), David Phillps (HI), Sean Kircher (NY) and Brian Stoehr (MD) all put together solid performances pushing them through to the quarter final round. Hawaiian hero Jonah Romero was not as fortunate and was left on the beach to watch his brother Jacob advance into the next round.

In the quarters, much of the local talent started to lose their steam after great first round efforts. Names such as former East Coast Champ John Heyman and famous photographer Matt Clack along with local charger Tim Seif (all from Long Island), where taken down along with NJ talent Ryan Wade.

Just prior to the Semi final heats the winds had shifted more west making the offshore conditions more textured and difficult to read. This left riders like Jason Bitzer( NJ/HI), Miguel Ochoa (NY),Sean Kricher (NY) and Brian Stoehr (MD) off their game. Jason and Brian finished 3rd and 4th in their heats respectively, both not finding the second score they needed to advance.

Miguel Ochoa had put in a solid run of maneuvers with dual rolls on a set wave but it was not enough to oust Jeff Hubbard and Jacob Romero of Hawaii. Placing 4th in the Semi Finals was Sean Kircher who after having a great event thus far seemed to fall victim to the wrong place wrong time syndrome that comes part and parcel with wave selection and contests.

The all Hawaiian final was an all out slug fest, with Willy Petrovick striking the first blow in the form of an ARS to Roll/Spin combo. It took riders ten minutes to counter Willy’s first nailed attempt and it was Jeff Hubbard’s “Gorf” (inverted air forward spin) that put him on the board behind Willy’s stronger first wave. David Phillips soon after answered with a cleanly rotated air reverse followed by a back up wave of ARS to Roll. Willy again put together an ARS to Roll combo that had him in the lead with two similar scores for both his waves. Jeff still needing a back up score was in tricky position as the time winded down. David Phillips found a smaller but clean faced wave to find his back up score with an ARS to Roll which had him in close proximity of Willy’s top two. In the final two minutes of the final Jeff Hubbard snagged a medium size left set wave which he tore to shreds from his first bottom turn. It was an ARS (Air Roll Spin), spin to roll to spin combination that set him up for his second consecutive win at the SCION NYBB Pro presented by Verizon Wireless.

With the results tallied it was Jeff who lead the webcast out as the winner thanking the USBA sponsors such as SCION, Bodyglove Bodyboards, Verizon Wireless and Eastcoastbodyboards.com for the support over the past 4 years. The USBA signed off the webcast with a shot of Jeff calling his wife heather to inform her of the win while young fans lined up for his signature!

NYBB Drop Knee, Amateur and Stand Up Division Results (DAY 1)

Sep 6, 2008
THE BODYGLOVE BODYBOARDS USBA TOUR

Presents

THE 2008 SCION NYBB PRO

Presented By: Verizon Wireless

SPONSORS: SCION, BODYGLOVE BODYBOARDS, MARRIOTT HOTEL & VERIZON WIRELESS

Amateur tour sponsor: EASTCOASTBODYBOARDS.COM NMD/VS/EMPIRE BODYBOARDS, AY! CARAMBA, & ALLY SPORTING GOODS, NYBODYBOARDING.COM

Day one of competition at The SCION NYBB Pro presented by Verizon Wireless saw overcast conditions and a fog layer line the sky. This had left organizers scared of possible rains of low visibility heading into the Drop Knee Pro and Amateur rounds.

As the morning hours rolled on the fog rolled out and provided a fun 2-3ft-background swell from Ike and Hanna (Hurricanes) that the Amateurs and Drop Knee USBA Pros took apart. The normal standouts progressed through the drop knee rounds with Willy Petrovick (HI) finding his stride as he worked his way to the final. Willy also had a strong presence in the Stand Up division, which was comprised of the most competitive field seen yet outside of USBA Hawaii events. Brian Stoehr and Jeff Hubbard came up with strong performances in the semi finals that had them once again make the NYBB Pro Drop Knee final for the 3rd year in a row. Jacob Romero was able to keep it consistent landing him in his second Drop Knee final of the year. In the finals of the DK Pro it was a hard snapping Jeff Hubbard who ousted fellow Hawaiian Willy Pertrovick for the win. Following their solid performances was Brian Stoehr who made his second appearance in the finals during the past two northeast USBA events. Jacob Romero who was on the ball through out the day could not keep his rhythm in the final and settled for forth place at days end.

Heading into the Open Amateur heats there was a few new NY faces that caught the eye of the judges today. Dave Fava and Nick Andosca where amongst a crew of NY riders that where making a push into the later rounds. It was much of the same into the 13-18 Amateur divisions with a strong NY presence. However it was New Jersey’s Dilan Druz along with Kauai’s Travis Smith who led the entire field all the way to the finals. In the Finals of the Open Am it was Travis Smith (Kauai HI), Dilan Druz (NJ), Miguel Ochoa (NY) and Brian Vitalo (NY) in that order first to forth, all of which put on a show from heat start to finish.

The 13-18 divisions was just as competitive if not more so then the Open Amateur division and once again it was Travis Smith who took out Dilan Druz the current US Amateur Champion in the final by a small margin. Following the two top seeded riders it was Billy Murphy (NJ) and Pat Camden (NY) who rounded out the competitive division. With only two more events on tour it will be a close race between our two top contenders Dilan Druz and Travis Smith for the USBA Amateur National title in 2008.

With Saturday looking to have sub par weather and surfing conditions organizers have opted to resume competition the final day of the waiting period on Sunday in hopes to catch the swell forecast to arrive tomorrow onwards.

Stay turned to USBATOUR.ORG and NYBodyboarding.com for more info on the event and also usbamag.com/webcast for webcast starting Sunday morning 8 am (EST).

BIG WEDNESDAY 30th ANNIVERSARY SCREENING AT THE 2008 NY SURF FILM FESTIVAL PRESENTED BY JETBLUE AIRWAYS

New York, NY [August 6, 2008] - The 2008 New York Surf Film Festival presented by JetBlue Airways is pleased to announce a special 30th Anniversary screening of BIG WEDNESDAY (1978) at Tribeca Cinemas.  Warner Brothers’ California surf classic, directed by John Milius (Apocalypse Now, Conan the Barbarian) and co-written with Denny Aaberg, is loosely based off their own experiences at Malibu and a short story Aaberg had published in Surfer Magazine entitled ‘No Pants Mance.’ The film follows three friends, the straight-laced and responsible Jack Barlowe (William Katt), party maestro and hot surfer Matt Johnson (Jan Michael Vincent) and the up-for-anything Leroy ‘the Masochist’ (Gary Busey), as they transition from adolescents to adults and how their relationships change with surfing, as well as with each other. The film takes place over the course of twelve years (1961-1974) and set to the backdrop of classic 60’s Malibu point surf, trips to Baja, beer-infused parties, the Vietnam War, introduction of psychedelic drugs and the shortboard revolution. The characters, informed by bad politics and equipment change, eventually drift apart; Jack goes to Vietnam, Leroy goes to Hawaii and Matt gets married.  Even their surfboard shaper and mentor Bear has gotten married and moved inland.  However, the trio reunites for the films climax, the great ‘Swell of 74,’ that cleanses everything that came before it and defines what they’ve become. The cult classic’s gorgeously filmed surf sequences are credited to legendary cameramen Dan Merkel, George Greenough (Inner Most Limits of Pure Fun, Echoes), George MacGillivray (Five Summer Stories) and pioneer surf film maker Bud Browne (Hawaiian Surfing Movies, Cavalcade of Surf). The NYSFF 2008 submission deadline is now closed.  Official Festival Selections and ticket sales will be announced Mid-August. About the New York Surf Film Festival Read the rest

Human Shark Island Challenge - Round 1 Highlights

ROUND 1 OF THE 2008 HUMAN SHARK ISLAND CHALLENGE was a raging success with the round of 32 producing some great highlights.

Sydney produced a near perfect winters day with offshore winds and clean 4 - 5 footers for the first round of the main event.

Heat number one featured the current ratings leader Uri Valadao (Brazil), former world champion and winner of this event Guilherme Tamega (Brazil) Chris Wilson (AUS) and Airam Cabrera (Canary Islands).

Valadao got off to an early lead and Cabrera was right on his tail. Chris Wilson was surfing amazing but couldn’t land the big moves. In the last 10 minutes Tamega showed his competitive experience with two big bombs that took him to the lead. Cabrera finished a close second with Uri Valadao left searching for a good second wave. Wilson finished fourth.

In heat two Mark McCarthy (Sth Africa) set a great standard with a flawless performance including two vaulting back flips that had the crowd cheering. Second place went to Jonathan Vega from Canary Islands who looked at home with lots of tube time and some highflying ARS’s. Jeff Hubbard (HAWAII)was also in great form but fell short and finished third with Brad Hughes (AUS) in fourth.
