Dragging the legs

The key to a good tube ride is often in the ability of the rider to stall effectively for the lip to overtake. There are two easy methods to applying the brakes.

The first is probably the more functional of the two methods: Dragging your legs. This will slow down your momentum and moving your hip to the inside rail can also create drag.

Step 3:

Pulling on the nose

This method of stalling is probably the easier one and can be tried by any beginner.

Pull up on the nose of your board to slow you down. This action causes the tail to dig in, creating a strong resistance and can bring to an almost complete stop.

As the lip begins to throw, it’s at your own discretion when to release this type of stall, and you have to be very careful that you don’t stall too heavily and lose too much speed.

Once you’ve mastered stalling, you’re well on your way to pulling off your favourite manoeuvres. Why not check out our other bodyboard masterclasses right here on Videojug.

Bodyboarding: The Air Roll Spin or ARS. The popular and impressive air roll spin will impress friends, family, and keen body boarders. Follow our expert body boarders advice on how to learn the perfect moves on the bodyboard.

Step 2:

Get some speed

The Air Roll Spin – or ARS – is a popular and dynamic trick that combines a roll and spin together in one aerial move. If your air rolls are good – AND ONLY IF THEY ARE GOOD – this is the move to be trying.

As with all aerials, performing the ARS requires plenty of speed and projection and simply will not work unless you leave the lip of the wave.

The best way to get speed is of course in your bottom turn or your surf line, sometimes known as trimming. You could do worse than looking at our guides to these moves here on Videojug.

Step 3:

Hit the lip

Once you’ve got your required speed, the next step is to launch into your roll off the lip – This is the part of the wave at the crest, where it’s just beginning to break.

You’ll need to project as high and as far in front of the wave as possible. But remember: You need to have a good wave or a good lip. Without these, you’ll get nowhere.

Step 4:

Roll and spin

So you’re now in the air, just where you want to be. Well now’s the time to do a half or three quarter roll.

About halfway into your roll, begin the spin. Spinning inward towards the face of the wave, as you also roll across it.

Step 5:

Land

It’s best to try and complete the spin while in the air, but if not, you can always land it and then bring it the rest of the way around in the whitewater.

Tip: Bringing your legs together as you land looks much better and allows you to continue down the line with a good bit of pace.

Step 2:

Get into position

The cutback – sometimes known as the cuttie or slash back – is for any intermediate or advanced bodyboarders that want to learn how to keep themselves within the wave’s power. Put simply, your aim is to guide the board back towards the breaking whitewater section of a wave after gliding out past it. This not only prolongs the length of your ride, but helps you gain speed and maneuverability.

As you accelerate towards the shoulder section with speed from your bottom turn, focus on the spot where you want to begin your carve.

Never forget that a cutback is best performed on the shoulder of the wave where you’ll have enough time to begin with a rounded slow turn.

Step 3:

The cuttie

Now you’re in position, slide your hands to the front of the board and hold its nose. Then drive your hip into the inside back corner of your board. This will help keep you from losing your edge while turning on the wave’s face.

Tip: The more you pull on the nose, the greater the spray you’ll throw. Great for point scoring or just showing off.

As a means of keeping the cutback flowing, it can be a good idea to keep your legs just touching the surface of the water to prevent spinning or bouncing out.

Step 4:

Continue the ride

Once you’ve turned hard enough that the wave has now caught up – this is when the cutback is about 90 per cent complete – it’s time to redistribute your weight so it’s centered over the board, remember to look in the direction you want to go and continue the ride by building trim speed.

So there you have it. The perfect cutback. Now you’re ready to get stuck in to our other bodyboarding masterclasses elsewhere on Videojug.

Step 2:

Gaining speed

The bottom turn is an absolutely essential part of bodyboarding. Once you’ve learnt how to take off, being able to perform a good bottom turn gives you your crucial speed and projection for the rest of the ride, and sets you up for the next maneuver.

To set up a good clean bottom turn, get into the wave nice and early. Then as you pick up speed down the wave’s face, lean towards the inside rail gradually. This will naturally cause you to pull up on your outside rail.

Step 3:

Positioning

Always pay strict attention to your positioning on the wave. In particular, be careful not go too far into “the flats” before you make your turn because this will cause your board to stall, and you’ll then have to really push yourself to make the wave.

Step 4:

Turning

So you’ve got your desired speed and positioned yourself correctly. Well, it’s now time to start your turn.

Project you and your board across the wave and up, setting yourself up for a barrel for example, or gaining speed down the wave line for a different move.

Once you’ve perfected your bottom turn, you now need to start gaining speed along the surfing line.

Step 2:

Catch a wave

The first thing you need to do is choose your wave and paddle towards it. Then turn around to face shore and kick for your life.

As you kick you may choose to paddle with either two arms or just the one. A lot of people find it easier to paddle with one hand and use the other to steady the board, while putting a little downward pressure on its nose.

But choosing which arm does what depends on your desired direction. Put more simply, if you want to go right, put your right hand on the nose while your left arm paddles. And if you want to go left, do the reverse.

Step 3:

Take off

If you’ve done everything right so far, you should now feel the wave pushing you down its face. In this case, stop paddling and grab the outside rail with your paddling arm about a third of the board length back from the nose.

If you perhaps haven’t got the right amount of speed to stay with the wave, then grab the front of the board with both hands, shift a bit of your weight to its front, and push it down the wave.

Step 4:

Start the trim

Now slide back a touch and angle your board in the direction you want to go. If it’s a steep drop, you might find pulling up on the nose helpful to stop the board from “pearling”, basically taking you head over heels.

Once you’ve made it to the bottom, you’re now ready to set up for a bottom turn or maybe even a trim line. And to learn how to do that, you need to take a look at our other movies right here on Videojug.

The key to surfing the line is all in the angling of your board. For example, if you’re angling left, your left arm should be placed on the nose of the board, while your right hand should grasp the outside rail, about midway down the board.

Step 3:

Picking up speed

Once you’re surfing the line, your main aim now is to pick up as much speed as possible to keep up with the wave and get to the next section.

Try shifting your bodyweight around the board until you find the position that gives you most speed.

Pulling your legs up a fraction out of the water will reduce your drag and greatly increase speed.

Step 4:

The surfing line

Look at some bodyboarders in the water and you’ll see how perfect positioning helps them in gaining maximum speed, essential for attempting to perfect any maneuver.

Now you’re good and ready to start having a proper go at spins, airs, or even Air Roll Spins. So check out our other films right here on Videojug.

Body boarding: Safety Tips. Our champion body boarders take you through the ten most important things to remember to ensure you body board in perfect safety.

Step 1:

Stay fit

Never forget that you’re always at the mercy of the wind and waves. The elements are always boss. So make sure you can swim and that you’re fairly fit.

Always be sure to warm up and stretch properly before making a splash. This will help you avoid cramps while in the water and muscle aches later on.

Step 2:

Enter and exit with care

Wait and enter the sea only when the waves hitting the beach are small. Be especially careful with strong shore breaking waves when exiting or entering at high tide, and of course steer clear of rocks and currents.

When getting out, catch a wave to the sand and never take your fins off in the water. Walk to the safety of the beach and do it there instead.

Step 3:

Surf in a crowd

It’s especially important to surf with a friend if you’re a beginner. That way, if you get in trouble, there’s always someone there to help you out of it. Even better, stick to surfing on beaches where there’s a lifeguard on duty.

Step 4:

Get in with the locals

There’s no-one that knows more about the sea conditions than the locals. So always take some time to ask them for advice. They’ll also be able to point out any possible hazards or areas of the beach to avoid.

Step 5:

Stick to what you know

This one’s simple: don’t ride waves you’re not ready for and don’t enter the water if you’re not sure you can handle the conditions. Know your own limits and you’ll be back to surf another day.

Step 6:

Work out the wave sets

Always be aware of how deep or shallow the waves are breaking. By taking 10 to 20 minutes to work out the wave “sets” – that is their size and frequency – before you surf, you’ll save yourself a lot of hassle later when trying to catch them.

Step 7:

Stay inside the barrel

When in the water and surfing the line for example, always try and stay inside the barrel as the wave closes. In most cases this will allow plenty of room for your manoeuvre and will ensure the wave’s lip – i.e. the part of the wave at the crest, where it’s just beginning to break – doesn’t land on you.

Step 8:

Check your leash

No matter what experience you have, always check your leash, making sure its attached to the board properly and is in good condition.

It should always be coiled to avoid twists which can easily wrap around your neck, legs or arms, sometimes making it impossible to swim.

Step 9:

Use sunblock

Always wear a good waterproof sunblock. You’ll know if you’ve been out for a few hours surfing in the sun without it. Also, if you’re not wearing a wetsuit, it’s a good idea to wear a UV proof rash vest to protect your upper body.

Step 10:

Wax your board

Waxing your board regularly is another obvious one, but is still absolutely vital if you want to avoid slipping off, messing up your move and spending most of the time in the waves rather then on them. Wax around the rail and nose of the board where you’ll need the most grip.

How To Bodyboard

How to body board: VideoJug’s expert body boarder shows beginners how to ride a wave on a body board. Body boarding is great fun for beach holidays, but this guide also provides tips for those who want to take it up as a sport.

Step 1:

You will need

1 bodyboard

1 wetsuit or rash guard

1 pair of fin socks

Step 2:

Put on the gear

Attach the body board leash to your upper arm.

Now make your way to the water’s edge and sit on your board. Put on your fin socks… Then your fins… And attach the fin tethers carefully to your ankles.

Step 3:

Paddle out

Before you hit the surf, have a practice on dry land. Lie on your board with the tail of the board at your lower belly area.

Hold on to its nose with both hands and begin to kick your feet. As you kick, keep your fins below the water’s surface for better propulsion through the water.

To paddle out with your arms, position yourself so your weight is right in the centre of the board and the board’s nose is an inch or two above the water. Now paddle with your arms just like if you were swimming…

Choose your spot to paddle out carefully. Go for white-water waves that are coming straight into the beach.

Walk into the water until it’s about knee deep. Lift your feet up high with each step to avoid tripping, or try walking backwards… Lay on your board… and start paddling.

Step 4:

Duck dive

To get beyond the breaking waves, you may need to duck dive beneath them.

As a breaking or broken wave approaches you, hold the board near its nose, head on to the wave, and push it under the water, at the same time pressing your knee down on the tail. Keep the nose pointed down and dive with your board under the wave as deep as you can go. Continue to kick until the wave has passed over and it’s safe to surface.

Step 5:

Catch a wave

The key here is to stay away from waves that are too big for your level of body boarding experience.

When you spot a good wave approaching, turn towards the beach and start to kick your feet. If you keep up a good speed you should feel yourself being picked up by the wave.

For extra speed, press down very slightly on the nose of the board… but not too hard or you could flip right over the top of the wave.

Step 6:

Ride the wave

Soon you’ll be ready to “run a trim line”. This is riding a wave to the right or left, sometimes in the direction the wave is breaking…… Again, practice the skill on dry land first…

If you’re going to the left, grab the side of the board or “rail” with your left hand and keep your right hand on the nose. If you’re going to the right, do it vice versa.

Now pull your body up over the front of the board and arch your back and hold your head high.

As you ride, pull up the rail of the board with the hand that’s to the side, causing the wave-side of the board to dig into the wave.

SAFETY WARNING

Don’t forget: For this sport you need to be a good swimmer. You should also body board where there’s a lifeguard on duty. And don’t get into the water if you’re unsure about the sea conditions.
