The final day of the 2008 SCION NYBB Pro Presented by Verizon Wireless was nothing short of an amazing event, and a huge crowd of over 5,000 people were there to witness all of the action. Mother Nature was the events best friend today, after tropical storm Hanna having blown through Long Island overight, leaving a solid pulse of swell and offshore/cross shore winds in her trail for Round 1 of the Men’s Pro Bodyboarding Division.

Starting off the contest was a focused Jeremy Wright who progressed through his heat with ease, along with a Puerto Rico’s Jorge Colomar. In heat two of round one Jason Bitzer seemed to have a field day with the solid conditions linking a barrel to roll to barrel combo and a solid invert to back up his first wave for the win. Miguel Ochoa of Long Beach did his home town proud placing second to an on fire Jeff Hubbard who was keeping the level of surfing high through the event. An upset went down with three Californian riders going down in round one. Rusty Friesen, Ray Machado and Justin Crossman all could not find their rhythm and were headed back to NYC to enjoy the rest of their vacations. Willy Petrovick (HI), David Phillps (HI), Sean Kircher (NY) and Brian Stoehr (MD) all put together solid performances pushing them through to the quarter final round. Hawaiian hero Jonah Romero was not as fortunate and was left on the beach to watch his brother Jacob advance into the next round.

In the quarters, much of the local talent started to lose their steam after great first round efforts. Names such as former East Coast Champ John Heyman and famous photographer Matt Clack along with local charger Tim Seif (all from Long Island), where taken down along with NJ talent Ryan Wade.

Just prior to the Semi final heats the winds had shifted more west making the offshore conditions more textured and difficult to read. This left riders like Jason Bitzer( NJ/HI), Miguel Ochoa (NY),Sean Kricher (NY) and Brian Stoehr (MD) off their game. Jason and Brian finished 3rd and 4th in their heats respectively, both not finding the second score they needed to advance.

Miguel Ochoa had put in a solid run of maneuvers with dual rolls on a set wave but it was not enough to oust Jeff Hubbard and Jacob Romero of Hawaii. Placing 4th in the Semi Finals was Sean Kircher who after having a great event thus far seemed to fall victim to the wrong place wrong time syndrome that comes part and parcel with wave selection and contests.

The all Hawaiian final was an all out slug fest, with Willy Petrovick striking the first blow in the form of an ARS to Roll/Spin combo. It took riders ten minutes to counter Willy’s first nailed attempt and it was Jeff Hubbard’s “Gorf” (inverted air forward spin) that put him on the board behind Willy’s stronger first wave. David Phillips soon after answered with a cleanly rotated air reverse followed by a back up wave of ARS to Roll. Willy again put together an ARS to Roll combo that had him in the lead with two similar scores for both his waves. Jeff still needing a back up score was in tricky position as the time winded down. David Phillips found a smaller but clean faced wave to find his back up score with an ARS to Roll which had him in close proximity of Willy’s top two. In the final two minutes of the final Jeff Hubbard snagged a medium size left set wave which he tore to shreds from his first bottom turn. It was an ARS (Air Roll Spin), spin to roll to spin combination that set him up for his second consecutive win at the SCION NYBB Pro presented by Verizon Wireless.

THE BODYGLOVE BODYBOARDS USBA TOUR

Presents

THE 2008 SCION NYBB PRO

Presented By: Verizon Wireless

SPONSORS: SCION, BODYGLOVE BODYBOARDS, MARRIOTT HOTEL & VERIZON WIRELESS

Amateur tour sponsor: EASTCOASTBODYBOARDS.COM NMD/VS/EMPIRE BODYBOARDS, AY! CARAMBA, & ALLY SPORTING GOODS, NYBODYBOARDING.COM

Day one of competition at The SCION NYBB Pro presented by Verizon Wireless saw overcast conditions and a fog layer line the sky. This had left organizers scared of possible rains of low visibility heading into the Drop Knee Pro and Amateur rounds.

As the morning hours rolled on the fog rolled out and provided a fun 2-3ft-background swell from Ike and Hanna (Hurricanes) that the Amateurs and Drop Knee USBA Pros took apart. The normal standouts progressed through the drop knee rounds with Willy Petrovick (HI) finding his stride as he worked his way to the final. Willy also had a strong presence in the Stand Up division, which was comprised of the most competitive field seen yet outside of USBA Hawaii events. Brian Stoehr and Jeff Hubbard came up with strong performances in the semi finals that had them once again make the NYBB Pro Drop Knee final for the 3rd year in a row. Jacob Romero was able to keep it consistent landing him in his second Drop Knee final of the year. In the finals of the DK Pro it was a hard snapping Jeff Hubbard who ousted fellow Hawaiian Willy Pertrovick for the win. Following their solid performances was Brian Stoehr who made his second appearance in the finals during the past two northeast USBA events. Jacob Romero who was on the ball through out the day could not keep his rhythm in the final and settled for forth place at days end.

Heading into the Open Amateur heats there was a few new NY faces that caught the eye of the judges today. Dave Fava and Nick Andosca where amongst a crew of NY riders that where making a push into the later rounds. It was much of the same into the 13-18 Amateur divisions with a strong NY presence. However it was New Jersey’s Dilan Druz along with Kauai’s Travis Smith who led the entire field all the way to the finals. In the Finals of the Open Am it was Travis Smith (Kauai HI), Dilan Druz (NJ), Miguel Ochoa (NY) and Brian Vitalo (NY) in that order first to forth, all of which put on a show from heat start to finish.

The 13-18 divisions was just as competitive if not more so then the Open Amateur division and once again it was Travis Smith who took out Dilan Druz the current US Amateur Champion in the final by a small margin. Following the two top seeded riders it was Billy Murphy (NJ) and Pat Camden (NY) who rounded out the competitive division. With only two more events on tour it will be a close race between our two top contenders Dilan Druz and Travis Smith for the USBA Amateur National title in 2008.

With Saturday looking to have sub par weather and surfing conditions organizers have opted to resume competition the final day of the waiting period on Sunday in hopes to catch the swell forecast to arrive tomorrow onwards.

Stay turned to USBATOUR.ORG and NYBodyboarding.com for more info on the event and also usbamag.com/webcast for webcast starting Sunday morning 8 am (EST).

USBA_SANDY BEACH PRO_FINAL UPDATE

Jul 4, 2008

6/23/08

EVENT: The Senor Frog 2008 Sandy Beach Pro

Presented by: The Hawaii National Guard & SCION Hawaii

Location: Half Point Sandy Beach Oahu

Sponsors: Senor Frogs, National Guard, T & C, Vitamin Water, Star 101.9,Wahoo’s tacos. Alohagifts.com, swellinfo.com, Kicks Fins, Elmnop, NMD & SCION Hawaii

The 2008 Senor Frogs Sandy Beach Pro went off without a hitch this past 4th of July weekend. Over 80 competitors came out to test their skills at Half Point the world famous reef break on Oahu’s south shore.

Both days of the two event where started with amateur rounds with many amazing rides by newcomers like Alex Brown, Matthew Holtman, Bubu Casamerio and many more. The Amateurs gave the Pro’s a heads up to where the future of the sport is going with consistent surfing through out the two days.

The 13- 18 AM division was one by Alex Brown narrowing out his Kauaian friend Matthew Holtman by 2 points. Trevor Cam and Alan Lamphere followed up with the 3rd and 4th sport respectively in the final.

Next in line where the Open Am heats in which another Kauaian Travis Smith made an impression while JB Hillen from the Westside of Oahu made a big push on to the USBA with his first USBA event!

The final of Open Am saw Oahu’s Reis Yonherio taking 4th which a great performance both days, followed by JB Hillen in 3rd. The top two spots went to Kainoa Behasa and winning Travis Smith, which went along way to build their credibility for the future.

The DK Pro was an all out war to the finals with the best of the best battling it out in all different tidal and wave conditions that both days provided. Main standouts where as always Bud Miyamoto & Dave Hubbard followed by Robbie Gall, Keegan Yuson who all just happened to be in the finals as well. It was Bud who made it happen

At the Sandy Beach Pro once again with his huge floaters and backside barrel riding skills, right behind him was Robbie Gall, Dave Hubbard and Kegan Yuson in that order to fill out the final placing.

The Women’s Pro was as hard hitting as can be with Claudia Ferrari once again taking out the event as she had done so in 2006. Other big standouts where finalists Aki Oguda (4h place), Aiaki Ancheta (3rd place) and Leila Alli (2nd place) who all put it on the line throughout both days of the contest!

The ever so competitive and fun standup division was taken out by none other the Noah Murray from Kauai who had landed a stand up air to win his final.

The most sought after title to the Senor Frogs Sandy Beach Pro is the Men’s Pro division. It is a proven fact that the USBA riders want to win this event badly as we had Jeff and Dave Hubbard fly over night from Australia to get through customs only 40 min prior to their heats just to make it to the event. Not only did these two make it happen with their schedules but they made it happen in the water with Dave Hubbard and Jeff both putting on amazing shows throughout both days. Dave ended up winning the entire event with two amazing barrel riders in the final to roll spin combos. A on fire Jacob Romero (2nd Place) took his campaign all the way to the finals, along with Paul Benco (3rd) & Spencer Skipper (4th)

A huge thank you goes out to Senor Frogs, Hawaii National Guard, SCION Hawaii, Vitamin Water, Wahoo’s Tacos and Star 101..9 for making this event a reality once again in 2008!

ROUND 1 OF THE 2008 HUMAN SHARK ISLAND CHALLENGE was a raging success with the round of 32 producing some great highlights.

Sydney produced a near perfect winters day with offshore winds and clean 4 – 5 footers for the first round of the main event.

Heat number one featured the current ratings leader Uri Valadao (Brazil), former world champion and winner of this event Guilherme Tamega (Brazil) Chris Wilson (AUS) and Airam Cabrera (Canary Islands).

Valadao got off to an early lead and Cabrera was right on his tail. Chris Wilson was surfing amazing but couldn’t land the big moves. In the last 10 minutes Tamega showed his competitive experience with two big bombs that took him to the lead. Cabrera finished a close second with Uri Valadao left searching for a good second wave. Wilson finished fourth.

In heat two Mark McCarthy (Sth Africa) set a great standard with a flawless performance including two vaulting back flips that had the crowd cheering. Second place went to Jonathan Vega from Canary Islands who looked at home with lots of tube time and some highflying ARS’s. Jeff Hubbard (HAWAII)was also in great form but fell short and finished third with Brad Hughes (AUS) in fourth.

(Above: Mark McCarthy punting)

Heat three saw the ocean back off and a lack of sets put pressure on all four competitors. Oliver Herrera (Canary Islands) found the best waves and took first ahead of Amaury Laverhne (Reunion Island) with Aussies Chris James and Michael Chapple in third & fourth respectively.

Heat four saw Ryan Hardy go to work nice and early with high speed critical surfing at it’s best. After a break from competition Hardy looked fired up and set the pace from the get go. Pierre Luis Costes (FRA) surfed consistently well to secure second with Wes Fischer (Sth Africa) and Dave Hubbard (HAWAII) relegated to third & fourth with a series of long but incomplete barrels.

(Above: Ryan Hardy inverted)

(Above: PLC on the foam ball)

Local knowledge paid off for John Showell (AUS) when he used his home turf advantage to it’s fullest in heat 5 with great combinations that filled the criteria perfectly. Second place went to Max Arent (AUS) who came flying out of one of the best tubes of the day to push wildcard Garth McGregor (AUS) into third. McGregor started with and 8 point ride but could not find a second strong score with Brazilian Luis Villar struggling into fourth.

Mitch Rawlins (AUS) and Mike Stewart (HAWAII) dominated heat six. Both of these riders left the smaller waves to Chad Jackson (AUS) and Hugo Pinheiro (PORT) and that’s how it finished.

(Above: Mike Stewart forever the man)

Rawlins and Stewart into the quarters. Jackson and Pinheiro to the sideline.

The second last heat of the day saw local wildcard Christian Ricco (AUS) comfortably win his heat with a succession of deep tube rides. It was just another day at the office for the shark island local with current World Champion Ben Player doing enough to finish second. Paulo Barcellos (BRZ) and Charlie Chaplet (FRA) struggled with positioning on take off and were eliminated.

Heat eight was a great way to finish with top 16 rider Dallas Singer combining speed and power on the bigger waves to dominate ahead of Magno Oliveira (BRZ). Magno was technically perfect on the smaller sets and he pushed Jones Russell (AUS) into third ahead of Ben Gohl (AUS) who picked up the only interference of the day.

In the end there 16…

The quarterfinals, semis & finals will now be staged when the next swell hits Sydney possibly as early as Thursday next week.

Local riders Dave Ballard and Christian Ricco have secured the local wildcards and will not have to contest the trials.

Sponsors wildcards include Big wave charger Chris James and Newcastle’s Garth McGregor.

Garth McGregor is enjoying a massive comeback to the sport after almost a decade away from the spotlight and is still regarded as one of the most powerful riders in the world.

McGregor has had several front covers in 2008 and has also secured a new sponsor and his own model. In his own words he is “Stoked”

“ I can’t wait mate. I have only surfed the Island a few times but I love the joint. So stoked that I am going to have a crack at the main event, it’s always been a dream” said an elated McGregor.

With the top 16 and the four wildcards straight into the main event ( July 1st – 20th ) the Number 6 trials are expected to be stacked with talent.

Riders from over 9 countries will be lining up against the best in Australia. An expected field of around 130 will contest the three-day event set down for June 27th – 29th at Cronulla Point.

About No 6…

The No.6 has been founded as an ‘anti’ statement by artisans in the sport of bodyboarding, a collective who believed the focus of progress in innovative riding and equipment had been lost. This led to the forming of The No.6, a company dedicated to the future development of high performance equipment.

The No.6 strives to meet the demands of core enthusiasts, to become the breeding ground for the progressive, the artistic, the anti-establishment, and the individuality that Bodyboarders have become renowned for.

Mark Dale, founder and head designer at The No.6 explains, “Our team has over 25 years in board manufacturing and foam development industries. This creates an inspirational environment for design, blending art and high concept with proven performance templates. That is The No.6.”

The No.6 set’s itself apart by releasing the latest 3D deck concepts, core developments, concave bottom technology, and all deck graphic capabilities.

Its focus on innovative riding and equipment makes The No.6 the perfect match for the Cronulla Shark Island Challenge, the proving ground for high performance bodyboarding in Australia.

The Bodyglove Bodyboards United States Bodyboarding Association is proud to announce a new partnership with Sport Chalet, a leading operator of full service specialty sporting goods stores with more than 50 locations in California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah. Under this exciting new partnership, Sport Chalet has come on board as the USBA’s new California Regional Tour title sponsor. Sport Chalet will also be offering special USBA branded promotions throughout the summer months while the Tour is taking place. The Sport Chalet California Regional Tour is part of first tier in the three tier (regional, national & international) competitive tour format that the USBA has rolled out across the nation for the USBA 2008 season. Jason Bitzer, founder of the USBA and Bodyglove Bodyboards Athlete, stated,”I find it hard to think of a better suited supporter of the USBA California Regional Tour. Sport Chalet has reached out to the bodyboarding community in full force. Through carrying the industry’s top brands and supporting key USBA California events, Sport Chalet is quickly becoming one of the most core supporters of the sport of bodyboarding.”

The Sport Chalet USBA California Regional Tour will carry heavy weight on the Bodyglove Bodyboards USBA National Tour as it features regional and national events on its 2008 schedule. These high-profile events will guarantee the attendance of the USBA top 16, including Jeff Hubbard, two-time USBA National Tour Champion. Hubbard was excited to hear the news of the new partnership, saying, “It is really cool to see a powerhouse retailer like Sport Chalet giving back to the sport and the youth through this partnership via the USBA. These USBA West Coast events should be a lot of fun and I am really looking forward to them.”
With the top riders in the United States competing in these events, it will be a great show for all who come out to watch the Sport Chalet California Regional Tour in person or online. In addition, Sport Chalet representative Todd Klasky said there are many USBA-branded promotions set for the summer. “Sport Chalet is excited to be able to promote the sport, the riders, and itself in such a positive atmosphere,” Klasky added. “One look at our bodyboard and accessory assortment this season and you will see that our position within the sport is very different. The partnership between our two organizations is a huge step in separating Sport Chalet from the competition of other general sporting goods chains.

With a on sight crowd of 2,000 and 18,000 webcast viewers the IBA and USBA top 32 riders went for broke for the entire day! The Surf conditions started the day with light winds and a 6-8 ft WNW Hawaiian size swell.Photos by Danny Black at Bodyboarders Hawaii The early rounds saw major action with David Crowley (AUS) progressing to the quarterfinals all the way from the trails. One of the biggest stories of the day was Pierre Costes (FRN) who was injured during his round 8 win over Mike Stewart (HI), Damien King (AUS) as he progressed with Darren Halse into the quarters (ENG). Pierre who is just coming off a fractured patella in his knee was hurt going backdoor during this heat, landing on his back leaving him almost enable to walk up the beach. He was assisted to the beach to rest and lick his wounds. Later he opted to continue to compete and was able to win his Quarter final heat only to be stopped in the Semi finals coming in early in pain From his fairly server injuries.Heading into the semis there were big upsets and big performances. Hugo Pinheiro (Port) was able to take out Pierre and Ben Player who was having a great competition early in the day with numerous backdoor barrels. Also moving through the first semi final was Brazil’s Paulo Bacellos who had been surfing solid all day! In the next semi final it was a dominant Jeff Hubbard leading the pack with the first 10 point ride of the day, consisting of a double barrel to ars. Following suit was Uri Valadao who was able to edge out his countryman Guilherme Tamega with a tie breaker going to the their third best wave. The final was an all out battle with blows coming from all riders. Jeff Hubbard sent a warning shot with a huge ars at backdoor, followed by Uri Valadao throwing almost the exact same maneuver just after. Paulo Barcellos through caution to the wind with a massive roll on a close out section at backdoor showing true commitment to the judges.Jeff answered back with a big invert again at backdoor. Hugo Pinheiro choose to stick to Pipe in the final and with Paulo Barcellos picking off the best Pipe barrels of the heat, leaving Hugo with not much to choose from. In the end it was Paulo who took out the talented field with Jeff Hubbard just behind him. An amazing crowd filled with Brazilian/Paulo supporters attacked him before the official beach byte scores where released. During the awards Paulo said in Portuguese to the webcast fans online “it has always been my dream to win at Pipe in 12 ft conditions but I will take the win in 6-8ft waves just the same”. Congratulations to Paulo for the much deserved win and thank you to our sponsors Bodyglove Bodyboards, Pride and NMD for their huge support of this years event.USBA STAFFFor more information please check out www.usbatour.org www.ibatour.com

Following his lead was Esbeirto’s Brazilian Country man Lucas Nogales moving through the first three rounds of competition.Heading into the mid of competition there was no shortage of action with Pablo Prieto Serrano (GERM/ENG/CNRY) having a solid run of barrels, one with a combo of three rolls, that progressed him on into day two for the 2008 Pipeline Pro. Ross Mcbride (CA) used his years of Pipe experience to rack up one of the highest scoring combination of waves with a 9.1 and 8.65 in the final heat of the day. Another California Nick Stratom put on a dark horse effort racking up the tube time and progressing through two rounds of competition!South Africa’s former 2x world champ Andrea Botha was in his true form once again, laying down heavy moves and doing what he needed to do to get on through the next round!More to come tomorrow with a slight drop in swell and starting with the Womens USBA 2008 Pipeline Pro presented by the Association of Womens Bodyboarding and The Duke Kahamoku foundation. Also the next two rounds of the Men’s pro will commence during the day’s competition as the NW swell begins to return in the afternoon!USBA STAFFCheck usbatour.org and ibatour.com for images from todays event! The event is being webcast at www.ibatour.com/webcast & usbamag.com/webcastAny inquiries, contact Terry McKenna terry@ibatour.com or media@ibatour.comor for USBA inquires jason@bodyboarding.tv or usbatour@gmail.com

Ross Mc Bride made his round 5 heat with flying colours but was stopped by Mr. Berentes in round 6.A injured Jacob Romero gained vengeance for his brother Jonah who was nocked out in his 5th as Jacob placed second with a sprained knee he hurt earlier in the day. The Women’s Semi final saw some great heats with Claudia Ferrari and Lei Ali taking stealing the show with smooth combo surfing gain them access into the finals. Rita Pires killing every wave thrown her way. Aoi Koike was able to follow suit and progress into the finals. In the end it was a last minute barrel to ARS from Aoi in the final that took the confirmed the win from Rita Pires with Claudia and Leila following a respectable 3rd and 4th.

Over the expectations, Luís “Porkito” Pereira was the big winner of the Sumol Nazaré Special Edition Yesterday at 9h30 AM the Praia do Norte was angry. Over six meters high, the waves punished the Lighthouse while on the sand the main concern was with the athletes safety. The will of facing the biggest waves ever ridden on a portuguese wave championship balanced with the fear that someone might not overcome the weight of the Praia do Norte waves. None of the 20 athletes hesitated when the organization, by 11 Am, gave the most waited order: the Sumol Nazaré Special Edition was ON.
During six hours, the bodyboard was at it’s highest level. Divided in four heats – one hour each – the bodyboarders faced with respect the Nazaré waves. With respect but without fear. Tubes, aerials, insane drops on huge waves, gave the spectacle that the several hundred spectators deserved for holding out the cold during the entire day. In the end, everybody was pleased.“Porkito” proved that Praia do Norte is his home ground, Pierre Louis Costes showed the skills – even when he had to hold out several minutes, without his board, in the impact zone – that make him the biggest young gun of the bodyboarding world and the Portuguese youngster, Jaime Jesus, showed his incredible resistance: he won the prize for the biggest wipe out. Manuel Centeno didn’t return home empty handed: he won the prize for the bigger wave. In the day that definitely placed Nazaré in the map of the world class big waves, the future of the sport also proved to be secured: in a very disputed classification, four athletes under 22 years old got in the top-8 and the runner-up is only 17 years old. Dozens leashes broken, bended boards, a injured jet sky, a 4×4 bike stealed by the sea and 20 bodyboarders that will never forget the day os 16th December of 2007. These are the victims of the third Sumol Nazaré Special Edition.
