BIG WEDNESDAY 30th ANNIVERSARY SCREENING AT THE 2008 NY SURF FILM FESTIVAL PRESENTED BY JETBLUE AIRWAYS

New York, NY [August 6, 2008] – The 2008 New York Surf Film Festival presented by JetBlue Airways is pleased to announce a special 30th Anniversary screening of BIG WEDNESDAY (1978) at Tribeca Cinemas. Warner Brothers’ California surf classic, directed by John Milius (Apocalypse Now, Conan the Barbarian) and co-written with Denny Aaberg, is loosely based off their own experiences at Malibu and a short story Aaberg had published in Surfer Magazine entitled ‘No Pants Mance.’ The film follows three friends, the straight-laced and responsible Jack Barlowe (William Katt), party maestro and hot surfer Matt Johnson (Jan Michael Vincent) and the up-for-anything Leroy ‘the Masochist’ (Gary Busey), as they transition from adolescents to adults and how their relationships change with surfing, as well as with each other. The film takes place over the course of twelve years (1961-1974) and set to the backdrop of classic 60’s Malibu point surf, trips to Baja, beer-infused parties, the Vietnam War, introduction of psychedelic drugs and the shortboard revolution. The characters, informed by bad politics and equipment change, eventually drift apart; Jack goes to Vietnam, Leroy goes to Hawaii and Matt gets married. Even their surfboard shaper and mentor Bear has gotten married and moved inland. However, the trio reunites for the films climax, the great ‘Swell of 74,’ that cleanses everything that came before it and defines what they’ve become. The cult classic’s gorgeously filmed surf sequences are credited to legendary cameramen Dan Merkel, George Greenough (Inner Most Limits of Pure Fun, Echoes), George MacGillivray (Five Summer Stories) and pioneer surf film maker Bud Browne (Hawaiian Surfing Movies, Cavalcade of Surf). The NYSFF 2008 submission deadline is now closed. Official Festival Selections and ticket sales will be announced Mid-August. About the New York Surf Film Festival The New York Surf Film Festival [NYSFF] will be held September 26-28, 2008 at Tribeca Cinemas in Lower Manhattan. The event consists of three days of independent short and feature films, cult classics, and world premieres from established surf filmmakers. The official Website of NYSFF, www.NYSurfFilm.com will bring the festival experience to the surf community through the streaming of trailers, current news, photos and box office information. NYSFF is the premier showcase for international independent surf film. The mission of NYSFF is to provide filmmakers who are exploring the diversity of surfing an opportunity to present their work to a larger audience. NYSFF’s aim is to build upon and shape the idea of what a surf movie is, while fostering the growth of this global community in NYC. NYSFF is a Don’t Drop In Production, founded by Adam Cannizzaro, Tyler Breuer, Michael Machemer, and Morgan Berk in 2008. NYSFF is looking for volunteers.
New York, NY [June 12, 2008] – The inaugural year of the New York Surf Film Festival will be held at Tribeca Cinemas on September 26th-28th, 2008. Located in lower Manhattan, Tribeca Cinemas is an arthouse rental theater in operation since 2004. In addition, Tribeca Cinemas hosts a variety of private tastemaker screenings and events throughout the year.

Ayler Young, Manager of Tribeca Cinemas says, “We are excited for the opportunity to host the 1st Annual New York Surf Film Festival. Over the last few years, surfing in New York has exploded and it is exciting to see the east coast surfing community come together to support this event.”

The submissions deadline is less than one month away, closing June 25th, 2008. The New York Surf Film Competition is open to independently produced feature-length and short films in the surf genre.
The New York Surf Film Festival is an event consisting of three days of independent short and feature films, cult classics, and world premieres from established surf filmmakers. The official Website of the New York Surf Film Festival, www.NYSurfFilm.com will bring the festival experience to the surf community through the streaming of trailers, current news, photos and box office information.
JERSEYMOBB was in the house and rolling deeeeeep, thanks to Dimone for rounding up all the hooligans!!
It was also great to meet Tharin White, Chuck’s son who made the trip from DE with Dad to see what all the commotion was about. My son Bobby is so amped on the great housewarming gift they brought him – he’s always so stoked when Chuck comes to visit, and was even more so this time, getting to meet and play with Tharin. Thx as always CW u da man

I know the audio situation was a major letdown, but sometimes Murphy’s law prevails and our mixer ended up getting fried. We’re sorry about that, but the good news is we will be re-showing the video again soon in both NY and NJ along with other current vids.

Registration ENDS February 21, 2008 – so get your entry in NOW!2008 NYNJSurf.com Little Nasty Big Wave Charity Surf Competition to Benefit Dean Randazzo “Do It for Dean!” Competitive Rules1. The contest waiting period is March 1 – 31, 2008 – EVERY effort will be made to hold the contest during the waiting period. Based on Little Nasty’s forecast, surfers will get a notice of “Possible-Go” 3 days in advance via email (with periodic updates), with final go or no-go 6PM the night before the contest. Since the NY and NJ coasts face different directions, it is possible that Little Nasty will call the contest one day in NY and another in NJ to get the best conditions for all surfers across the area, although it’s not impossible that it will be held on only one day.2. Surfers MUST pre-register by completing and submitting the “Competitor Registration and Release” form by February 21, 2008 and will be issued a Yellow “Do it for Dean” Rashguard that will be worn the day of the contest. (Lead time is needed to mail out and distribute the rashguards!)3. Surfers will be asked to obtain pledges from individuals or corporations based on the largest wave they surf while wearing the rashguard during the day of the contest. (e.g.: 8ft wave x $5 pledge = $40). Pledges may be accepted up to the day of the contest.4. To be eligible to win the “Little Nasty Cup”, the surfer must be captured on film wearing the rashguard, and the photo submitted to pics@NYNJSurf.com no later than midnight, April 8, 2008.5. Contest Photographers will be available at (hopefully) 5 designated locations across NJ and NY, however individual or groups of contest surfers are free (or even encouraged!) to hook up with their own photographers at disclosed or undisclosed locations in search of the biggest waves they can find. Locations will be announced February 29th, 2007.6. Surfers are not restricted to any hour, time slot, or location, and may surf all or any part of the day from dawn til dusk, or all or any part of the day at one or multiple locations if they choose.7. Surfers from outside the NJ and NY area will be able to participate on any day March 1 – March 31, 2008, but MUST be photographed wearing the rashguard to be eligible to win. While Dean is a New Jersey native, he touched people around the world – competitors from the world over are encouraged to enter!8. Photographs submitted remain the sole property of the photographer, and will only be reproduced/printed/distributed with permission. All judging will be done by NYNJSurf.com. The judges will compare submitted photographs of the largest waves to determine a winner. The decision of the judges is final.9. For purposes of expediting pledge collection and getting funds to Dean as quickly as possible, all competitors are asked to “self judge” immediately at the end of the contest. Please estimate the # of feet of your largest wave, complete your pledge forms, and fax to the “Do It For Dean!” faxline at 516 775-6273. 10. The large, silver “Little Nasty Cup” will be engraved and presented to the surfer photographed on the biggest wave in NJ/NY, and The NYNJSurf.com Silver Platter to the surfer who raises the most pledges, both to be awarded at an upcoming awards ceremony in April, held for the year, and passed on to the winners in 2009! A special award will be presented to the Worldwide winner.the complete competitors package here….http://www.nynjsurf.com/BigWaveContest/Big…sPacket2.08.pdf

Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

Unfortunately, what has been proposed by the Atlantic Sea Island Group (ASIG) here in NY is a fixed MEGA-ISLAND storing and transporting Liquid Natural Gas (LNG). 4 Holding Tanks each holding 6,356,640 cubic feet of LNG to be placed on this structure. 13 miles off of New York and 19 miles off of New Jersey. This mega-island will be right outside the harbor of NY. The materials they wish to use are to DREDGE nearby waterways. One can only imagine the contaminated content of this sediment. A sub-sea pipeline would be added that would transport the natural gas to an offshore connection with the transcontinental gas pipeline corporation’s pipeline.

First and Foremost this island is to be built on New York and New Jersey’s only naturally occurring reef: Cholera Bank.

We also have endangered species in our area such as:
The North Atlantic Right, Fin and Humpback Whales along with
Kemp Ridley’s, Loggerhead and Leatherback Sea Turtles.

The Island itself will need 116 acres of ocean sea floor to be used as a footprint. It will be 25 feet above water, the holding tanks higher. The island would be approximately 60 acres and during construction 9,000 acres of an exclusion zone has been requested. Mega-tankers will be using this island and increase traffic by 27-250 tankers yearly.

Construction to begin in 2009 and end 2014.

I am seeking your support to the prevention of this LNG Mega-Island. It will have permanent and devastating effects ecologically let alone the safety concerns on a Homeland Security basis. There must be another way to provide energy.

If this Island is built. There will be countless others.
