NEW YORK, September 9, 2007 – The 3rd Annual NYBB Pro went down on Sunday, September 9, 2007 at Lido Beach in Long Island, New York. A small wind swell combined with the early showings of sub-tropical depression Gabrielle provided waves in the two – three foot range for the last day of the event’s scheduled competition window. A large crowd turned out for this warm, sunny fall day and watched as the international field of riders battled it out in small conditions.
Round one saw standout performances with Rex Moribe( HI), Dan Worley (FL) , Ryan Wade( NJ), Jeff Hubbard (HI), Dave Hubbard (HI), Pedro Rosario (Venezuela), Brian Stoehr (MD) and Jacob Romero (HI) all winning their heats and advancing to the quarter finals. Also advancing on were Jonah Romero (HI) Willie Petrovich (HI), John Colpepper (FL), Spencer Skipper (HI) Miguel Ochoa ( NY) Mark Klein (CA) Dillon Druz ( NJ) and Tim Seif (NY).
Quarter final # 1 saw Spencer Skipper hitting strong reverses to win the heat. Also advancing was Will Petrovich .Quarter final # 2 had the Floridians Worley and Colpepper going down at the hands of two Hawaiians with Jacob Romero winning the heat and Jeff Hubbard taking second to advance out. Quarter final #3 Kauai boy Jeff Hubbard and East Coaster Brian Stoehr eliminated Californian Mark Klein and New York local Tim Seif. Quarter Final #4 was the heat to watch, while Jacob Romero decisively won the heat, the other three riders provided some twists. Fourteen year old New Jersey wonder kid, Dillon Druz seemed poised to advance to his first Pro Semi – final until he was penalized for running into Venezuelan Pedro Rosario with Druz drawing the interference; it looked like Rosario would advance to the next round. In the last moments of the heat, local boy Miguel Ochoa landed a textbook ARS, giving him the highest score of the contest and moving him into the Semi-finals as the fans on the beach went nuts! This won him the Unsound Surf Shop “Maneuver of the Day Award” gaining him three hundred dollars.
In Semi-final #1, it was Spencer Skipper laying down solid reverses and smooth combinations to win the heat and advance to the Final. Not to be left out, Jeff Hubbard took out his brother Dave and put an end to Miguel Ochoa’s day to make the final. In Semi-final #2 The two brothers from Maui, Jacob and Jonah Romero, eliminated Wille Petrovich and Brian Stoehr.
The all Hawaiian Final was a battle, not only between talented riders but against the conditions. A diminishing swell and incoming tide made wave selection crucial. Jonah Romero just wasn’t able to put together the rides he needed and would finish in fourth place for the day. In his first ever USBA final, Jacob Romero put together some solid rides and finished third. In a very close finish, the fight for the win came down to two long-time friends. In only his third contest this year, Spencer Skipper put in a strong performance all day and continuing through the final with fluid combinations and smooth reverses. In the end though, it was defending USBA and World Champion Jeff Hubbard edging out Spencer Skipper for his first NYBB Pro victory.
