Man Made Island to be Built off Long Beach, NY
By NYBB on Feb 1, 2008 in NYBODYBOARDING
Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.
Unfortunately, what has been proposed by the Atlantic Sea Island Group (ASIG) here in NY is a fixed MEGA-ISLAND storing and transporting Liquid Natural Gas (LNG). 4 Holding Tanks each holding 6,356,640 cubic feet of LNG to be placed on this structure. 13 miles off of New York and 19 miles off of New Jersey. This mega-island will be right outside the harbor of NY. The materials they wish to use are to DREDGE nearby waterways. One can only imagine the contaminated content of this sediment. A sub-sea pipeline would be added that would transport the natural gas to an offshore connection with the transcontinental gas pipeline corporation’s pipeline.
First and Foremost this island is to be built on New York and New Jersey’s only naturally occurring reef: Cholera Bank.
We also have endangered species in our area such as:
The North Atlantic Right, Fin and Humpback Whales along with
Kemp Ridley’s, Loggerhead and Leatherback Sea Turtles.
The Island itself will need 116 acres of ocean sea floor to be used as a footprint. It will be 25 feet above water, the holding tanks higher. The island would be approximately 60 acres and during construction 9,000 acres of an exclusion zone has been requested. Mega-tankers will be using this island and increase traffic by 27-250 tankers yearly.
Construction to begin in 2009 and end 2014.
I am seeking your support to the prevention of this LNG Mega-Island. It will have permanent and devastating effects ecologically let alone the safety concerns on a Homeland Security basis. There must be another way to provide energy.
If this Island is built. There will be countless others.
