The Town of Hempstead is proud to be America’s largest Township. With a population of just under 762,000 people, Hempstead Town is bigger than six states. The Town encompasses more than 142 square miles, containing 51 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,599 miles of town, county, state, and federal roads. We are also one of the nation’s oldest towns, dating back to 1644. Our history traces our development from the earliest day of European settlement on the North American Continent. Hempstead Town residents treasure this rich and unique heritage.

We invite you to share our heritage by visiting the more than twenty-five museums and historical sites located in Hempstead Town. The Cradle of Aviation Museum, a state-of-the-art facility with a collection of more than 70 aircraft and spacecraft, immerses visitors in the history of aviation. Our historical societies take you back in history with their ever-changing displays. The Town of Hempstead offers some of the finest wildlife and nature areas in the country. Nature lovers and bird watchers can enjoy our nationally declared Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary, hiking trails and nature preserves. Our commitment to preserving the beauty of Hempstead is also evident in our almost 1,400 acres of parkland. Visit Long Island’s newest and most innovative environmental recreation facility, Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve. The park features an array of wildlife, walking trails and breathtaking views of Long Island and the New York City skyline.

Recreational activities are readily available in the Town of Hempstead. We have some of the finest golf courses in the nation. Hempstead offers the best in shopping, including The Mall at the Source and Roosevelt Field. We proudly offer professional sports teams, including the New York Islanders (hockey), the New York Saints (lacrosse), the Long Island Rough Riders (men’s soccer) and the New York Power (women’s soccer). Hempstead Town is also host to thoroughbred racing at Belmont Park, the site of the third and most elusive jewel of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes. The New York Jets (football), practice at Hofstra University.

Perhaps Hempstead’s greatest resource is its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Among the miles of pristine beaches in the Town of Hempstead, lies famous Jones Beach, where you can enjoy a wide range of activities. Stroll the boardwalk, bask in the sun or take a dip in the ocean. From paddleball and shuffleboard to volleyball and basketball, Jones Beach offers something for everyone. In addition to the beaches, an abundance of navigable inland waterways makes Hempstead Town a true haven for recreational boating, affording an opportunity to enjoy the pleasures of power boating, sailing, fishing and a wealth of other marine activities.

Our churches with their magnificent altars, architecture and stained glass windows make a visit worthwhile. Restaurants serve gourmet food comparable to delicious meals anywhere, priced to fit any budget. Our hotels are distinguished for their fine rooms and service. It’s all happening in Hempstead Town!
